Overview
Introduction and Learning outcomes
This course provides a systematic and holistic education and guidance to hen welfare practices and cage-free poultry farming. Course participants are educated on the need for hen welfare, global best practices, cage-free farming and how to adapt these practices to local poultry farm settings. This Hen Welfare course closely mirrors the Hen Welfare Training Guide and you are highly encouraged to refer to this for further reading and information.
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Understand the basic underlying principles and practices of hen welfare
- Implement and integrate hen welfare practices on poultry farms
- Support and advocate for the inclusion of poultry welfare into existing policy and legal frameworks.
- Train others and disseminate knowledge on Hen Welfare and Cage-free Poultry Farming
Note: While this course focuses on the Nigeria context and poultry species in the country, many of the underlying welfare principles can be replicated in several African poultry farm settings. Nevertheless, where relevant and highly contextual, we will develop additional course modules for different countries in Africa and their respective ubiquitous poultry species and farming contexts. This would be done in collaboration with relevant animal welfare stakeholders based in the country of interest.
